A Commonwealth
Citizen who can prove, by original documentation, that
he/she has a British-born grandparent, and who is aged 17
or over, may apply
for entry clearance to take up residence in the UK. He/she
will need to show that
he/she is able to work and that he/she intends to take or
seek employment in the UK,
and that he/she will be able to maintain himself/herself and
his/her family (if any) in the UK,
without recourse to public funds.
No
Work Permit is required, and for a Commonwealth Citizen with
the correct ancestral
connection this can be the best route for entry into the UK.
Application is usually made by
Commonwealth Citizens through the British High Commissioner
in your home country.
Attn
South Africans: This Application must be drawn very carefully
and the applicant must be well
prepared before going to Pretoria with the application compiled
by us as there exists a good chance
that he/she might be interviewed. An applicant will
also under certain circumstances be allowed to
change he/she status from a visitor to an ancestry permit
holder from within the UK.
After
a period of staying in the UK for four years, you can then
apply for 'right
of abode' - and after a
further year, you may apply
for a British Passport.
A
number of requirements must be met to successfully gain right
of abode or a British passport
however. For full details, click
