Work Permits

Tier I  | Tier II | Documentation Needed | Shortage Occupations

2. Tier II Positions:

For Work Permit applications for positions which do not come within Tier I, it will be
necessary for the UK employer to carry out an acceptable UK resident labour test before the
Work Permit can be applied for.  However, the minimum qualification and\or experience
requirements of the Work Permit Scheme apply in full to Tier II applications.

3. Processing time:

As soon as the employer and employee has furnished us with the necessary documentation we will
within a day or two lodge the application at the Department for Education and Employment who will
then issue the necessary Work Permit normally within three or four weeks.  The Department for
Employment are taking great steps to improve their efficiency, and are aiming to complete 80% of
correct applications within one week of receipt by March 2001.  At the time the application is lodged, the
employee must not be resident in the United Kingdom.  However, after the Work Permit has been
granted, the employee has a maximum period of six months to enter the country with the permit which
will then be stamped in the Passport of the employee by the UK Immigration Officer on arrival, thus
activating the Permit.  Full Work Permits may currently be obtained for up to four years, depending on the
circumstances, and applications can be made for permanent residence at the completion of four years
residence in the UK on this basis.

4. Applications may be made for British citizenship one year after a permanent residence permit has
been granted.
