Taxi's or "Black Cabs" are the luxury way of getting
around London.
Whilst they may be more expensive than public transport, they
are always
clean, reliable, spacious (up to five adults can sit comfortably
in the back),
and the cabbie nearly always knows where he's going. A
good one will know
all the short cuts!
Black
Cab drivers spend four years training to get their license,
and will just about know
where every street is in London. Quite a remarkable
feat. Black Cabs can be found at
stands all over the city, although if their yellow light is
on, you can flag them down in passing
traffic. Tipping is acceptable but not obligatory -
around 10% or £1 is standard for good service.
You
can book a black cab by calling the 24 hour service number:
0207 286 0286. They will charge a
call out fee of £2. Any other queries or comments can
be made by phoning the Public Carriage Office
on 0207 230 1631.
