Knowing the Basics

General hints and tips
about living in London.  Whilst not knowing
these won't really make your life miserable - they are handy to know; and may
bring a giggle on learning a little about London culture.

Pickpockets

Like in any many city of the world, London has it's share of these people.  Whilst you don't
have to carry your bag over your head in paranoia, it pays to be aware that they are around.
Some area to be especially vigilant are tube and train stations, tourist areas (ie: the Tower of
London) and major shopping areas, such as along Oxford Street.  Should you realize that your
wallet or purse has been lifted, get to the nearest phone booth and cancel your cards immediately;
these operators don't waste anytime into getting as much as they can before the cards are stolen.

Also be aware of those standing behind you when using ATM's - recent BBC documentary's have
noted a scam whereby pickpockets note your PIN, minutes before lifting your wallet.

Escalators On the Underground

Not a biggy, but the general rule is that you stand on the right, or walk down on the left.  This helps
to ease congestion particularly during rush hour.  You may also be bailed up by an irate stressed
commuter running to catch their train should you try standing on the left during these periods -
you have been warned!
